- Rare Antique Wardle Majolica Covered Matchbox Match Striker Bird Fan c.1870, em63
Offered for your private collection is this magnificent and RARE antique majolica covered match striker matchbox.
Made by the Wardle & Co. Of Hanley, England who produced majolica from 1871-1910.
This covered match striker features the bird and flowers on a fan pattern which reflects the rising interest in Japanese patterns during that period.
Here you have a Crane on a blue fan and a flowering tree on a pale yellow fan. The handle is in branch form.
The bottom of the box is ribbed so you can strike your matches!
It is in excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks! It does have overall glaze crazing which is normal for antique majolica .
It measures a little less than 4.5 inches long by 2.75 inches wide and stands 2.75 inches tall with lid.
I did find this in one of my reference books with a value of $500-$600.
