Offered for your private collection is this fabulous and unique antique french faience plate.
Totally hand painted and made in the Fourmaintraux factory in Desvres, France between 1866-1887.
This plate features a blue lined rim with four fleurs-de-lys, two yellow & rose and two light and dark blue. The center features a large white bird, a swan or goose shot through with an arrow. The Franco-Prussian war started in 1870 so I imagine this decoration has something to do with that. Is it the silent French way of saying they will beat the Prussians? Did having these kind of message plates give them courage?
This plate is in excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks. There are a few rim spots where the color or glaze did not cover which is normal and expected with antique faience and majolica.
It measures almost 9.5 inches in diameter.
