Offered for your collecting enjoyment is this beautiful antique hand painted plate from my last trip to France.
It is signed by Henri Chaumeil who we know was born in 1877, he worked with his father, Alcide Chaumeil, in their Paris factory and did this type of decoration between 1890-1920, when his father died in 1919 Henri went on to create his own art work in crackled glaze pottery.
Hand painted and signed under glaze by Henri Chaumeil. It is also marked with "Decor Strasbourg Fait Main" or 'Old Strasbourg, hand made' which is writen over the glaze.
Also, what is so great for me is the paper label from the Geo Martel faience factory which was located in Desvres. So this links the 2 men!
Now, did Martel commission Chaumeil to do this plate or did Martel buy the plate already painted and add his own label?
We know the father Chaumeil would decorate for other factories, this could be one of them!
It features a scalloped and combed rim and a central bouquet of an opening tulip with wild flowers. Just stunning!!
It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs!! There are kiln marks and some wear on the back which is normal for antique faience.
It is a nice large plate that measures 10 inches in diameter, the perfect size for display or use.
Add this to your antique French faience today or give as a fabulous gift!!
