Offered for your private collection is this amazing antique plate from the renowned Sarreguemines majolica factory in the east of France. This piece was produced between 1857-1890.
This is what is known as "Emaux Ombrants" and was made by the Rubelles majolica factory.
That factory existed from 1827-1857. In 1857 Rubelles closed their doors and sold their molds.
This one was sold to the Sarreguemines majolica factory. Sarreguemines stopped it's impressed "SARREGUEMINES" makers mark before 1890, therefore this beautiful majolica plate was produced c.1857-1890.
The "emaux ombrants" process is a stamped "intaglio" design which is an incised image where the various colored glazes were poured into the plate which gave the design in the cavities the appearance of shadows and the designs in the high relief areas were emphasized.
The intaglio designs were most often of fruit subjects such as this plate featuring berries and leaves with a very ornate designed rim that is slightly scalloped. Just beautiful!
It measures 8.25 inches in diameter.
It is in excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks! There is overall glaze crazing due to age that is normal for antique majolica.
It is clearly marked on the back with the impressed "SARREGUEMINES" and the impressed numbers 215/3.
